15 Tasks to Make Moving Day Easier: Consumer Responsibilities

Moving day is a big deal. It can be exciting, it can be stress-inducing, and it can also be really daunting. For most people, moving from one home to another means finding the time to pack up your belongings into boxes or bins before hauling them out of your old house and then unpacking them at your new place. This process may seem simple enough on paper but when you have to do all these tasks by yourself – it’s a lot more difficult than you think!

In this post, we will discuss 15 tasks for moving day (consumer responsibilities) so that you don’t go crazy while trying to get moved out of your old home and settled in at your new one. We’ll start with…

Get organized

This is one of the most important things you can do for yourself during this process. Make sure that all loose papers are filed and everything else has been labeled so that when it comes time to pack up your belongings, you know where everything goes. You will also want to label any boxes or bins that you plan on packing up beforehand so they don’t get mixed in with other items from around the house. Create an inventory spreadsheet if necessary- just keep track of every item as best as possible so you don’t lose track of anything while moving day is in progress.

Moving can be a huge mess if you let it, so having everything organized beforehand will go a long way towards keeping things manageable and stress-free on the big day!

Pack up any personal items that are not going with you on moving day

We all know that moving day is hectic, and there are so many things that need to get done. One task you may not have thought of is packing up your personal items before the big move. The last thing you want to do in the midst of moving is pack up and organize your belongings.  However, it is important to do this step because if you don’t, your belongings will be packed up in boxes with all of the other things that were moved from the old house.

Before you pack up your personal items, take a look around the house. What belongings do you want to move with you? These are things like family pictures or important papers that need to go in storage somewhere.

Also keep in mind how much space you have available for moving day. If all of your boxes won’t fit into one vehicle on moving day, then there is no point in packing up personal items that won’t arrive at the new place with you.

Once you know what belongings to pack, and how many boxes they will take, start labeling them accordingly so when it comes time to unpack everything; we can find our important papers easily without having to spend hours digging through a box of clothes.

Get rid of any unnecessary items that are taking up space in your home

Now is the time to really think about what’s important and what isn’t. With every box that gets packed up into storage, you want to ask yourself if it is something necessary or just taking up space in your home.

If you decide an item doesn’t need to go with you on moving day, then now would be a good time to give it away or donate it to charity.

By getting rid of items that you don’t need, will not use, or are just taking up space in your home; you free yourself from the stress and hassle of having them around while packing on moving day!

Once you have gotten rid of any unnecessary clutter, now is a great time to do a little cleaning so the next time you walk through your home, it looks and feels like you want it to.

By completing these tasks for moving day, you are ensuring that everything goes as smoothly as possible. It is important to be proactive instead of reactive when getting ready to move out of one house into another- this ensures that nothing is missed or forgotten.

Find a moving company to help with all your heavy lifting

Moving is no easy task, and it can be especially difficult to get all of your heavy belongings moved out. Whether you are moving across the street or across the country- getting everything moved by yourself takes up a lot of time that could otherwise be spent on more pressing matters.

Finding a moving company to help with some of these tasks will free up your time, allowing you to focus on more important things rather than the arduous task of moving.

Make sure before hiring a company that they are properly insured and have all necessary licensing so there is no risk in getting into an accident or being held responsible for damage done during the move! A few simple tasks can be completed beforehand which will help to make the moving day go as smoothly as possible!

Take pictures of the inside of your old place before you move out

It is important to take pictures of the inside of your old place before you move out. This will make it easier for you to remember what it looked like when you return someday, while also protecting you from being charged with property damage fees by asking a friend or neighbor to watch over your apartment while taking photos.

Doing this will also create a good baseline for how much you should deduct from your security deposit!

Disconnect the utilities in your old home

Disconnecting the utilities in your old home is a job that most people forget about. It may seem like an easy task, but it can be time consuming and frustrating if you don’t know what to do or where everything is located!

Below are some tips on how best to go about disconnecting all of the services:

  • The service that you will need to be the most concerned with is electricity. You must shut off all services and then go into your breaker box and turn everything off there as well.
  • Water should also be turned off at this point, but it may require more than just one person in order for the task to get done. Dealing with water can be dangerous, so if you are not able to turn it off yourself or have help then consider calling a 24 hour plumber who is capable of handling the job for you.
  • Sewer is turned off at your property line by removing the cap and turning the valve 90 degrees clockwise until it stops.
  • Gas should be turned off at the meter, which is located outside of your house near the street. It may also require more than one person to do this task depending on how it has been set up!

Being proactive about disconnecting all services will save you time and effort when moving into a new home where utilities will need to be turned on again.

Clean out the refrigerator and freezer

Cleaning out the refrigerator and freezer is an important task to take care of before moving day, because it will ensure that nothing goes bad when you are in transit.

It can be difficult to keep track of everything inside your fridge while packing up all your belongings – so for this reason we recommend cleaning out both compartments prior to getting ready to leave.

Opening up the refrigerator and freezer will allow you to see how much food is inside, and determine if any of it needs to be thrown away or donated before you leave your old home for good! You can also take this time to clean out both compartments so they are free from the remnants of all the yummy foods that once resided within.

When the time comes to unpack your groceries, you will be glad that you took a little extra time to clean out both compartments before moving day! It is important not to forget about this task- otherwise, it can result in some very unpleasant surprises as soon as you go to use the fridge again once moved into your new home!

Pack up clothes, bedding, kitchen supplies, etc.

Packing up clothes, bedding, kitchen supplies, and so on is a task that many people tend to forget about. This can be extremely inconvenient if you have not taken the time to pack these things before moving day arrives!

It’s easy for this job to get overlooked when there are larger items such as furniture or appliances that need packing too – but the task of packing up all of your smaller items can be a huge hassle if you forget about it – and even more expensive!

When moving into a new home, having to purchase things like pots and pans or dishes that were once yours is an unnecessary expense. By taking some time before leaving your old place to pack these small essentials, you will be in much better shape when you arrive at your new home.

It is also important to pack up all of these items before moving day because it will help you avoid losing them! It’s not uncommon for people who are packing themselves to become distracted or forget where they placed things, and by the time they get to their final destination, everything has disappeared.

Plan for pets

Take a few minutes before leaving your old home to set up things that will be necessary for you and your pet(s) during the move! A good rule of thumb is to pack as many items as you think it will take – then double that.

The most important thing to remember is that your pet(s) will need food and water at their new place too! If you do not have a friend or neighbor who can look after them while the move takes place, then consider taking some of these things with you in your car during the drive over so they are taken care of until you can pick them up.

It is also important to take their favorite toys with you so they feel more comfortable in their new environment! Your pet(s) will likely be anxious during this time, and having something familiar around may help ease the transition into your new home.

Remember – Pets cannot speak! Taking some extra time before moving day will ensure that your pet(s) are comfortable in their new home, which is especially important if it has been quite a while since they have moved.

Schedule a moving truck or van rental

Be sure to get enough space for everything you are taking with you! This is also a good time to pack any boxes that need it now so you don’t have to do this on moving days when you’re exhausted from packing everything else.

When you’re ready to begin packing, be sure that all of your items will fit into the moving truck/van – and if they won’t – pack them in! If there is any chance for rain on move day it is a good idea to cover up anything left outside so it does not become damaged.

Schedule a time with the moving truck/van rental company that will work for both of you and then take a few minutes to double-check everything before it is time to leave. If your new place does not have enough space for all of your belongings, be sure to schedule another trip with the moving van!

Put all of your important documents in one place

When you’re finished packing it’s time to sit down and take a breath! One of the last things that you should do before leaving your old home is putting all of your important documents (i.e., passports, birth certificates, social security cards, insurance policies) in one place so they are easily accessible once you arrive at your new home.

If you are moving into a new place, then this is an important step that can be easily overlooked. When everything has been packed away it’s easy to forget about where things were placed and by the time you get your new home these documents will have disappeared. Putting all of your “important” information in one central location before leaving for your new home will help you avoid this unnecessary expense.

By taking some time before leaving your old place to pack these small essentials, you will be in much better shape when you arrive at your new home. It is also important to pack up all of these items before moving day because it will help you avoid losing them! It’s not uncommon for people to become distracted or forget where they placed things, and by the time they get to their final destination, everything has disappeared.

Label all boxes by room or area they belong in

The most important part of this step is to make sure that you do not mix up the boxes when it comes time for unpacking. For example, if there are kitchen supplies in a box labeled “bedroom,” then your organizing efforts will be wasted because you won’t know where things go!

Packing and labeling all boxes before moving day ensures that everything will be where it is supposed to be once you arrive at your new home. This step can be tedious, but the extra effort makes unpacking much easier!

Make sure to pack any fragile items first and check that they are properly packed.

When the moving day comes, the stress levels are probably already high. By making sure your fragile items are well packed, you will avoid additional stress when unpacking them at the new location. This is because breaking an item can have consequences that go beyond just replacing it with a new one—it could also increase the risk of injuries for anyone involved in moving or packing it.

Give yourself plenty of time before moving day

Moving day is not easy on anyone – even if everything has gone according to plan and nothing gets lost or damaged during transport, there are still many hours of hard work ahead. The last thing you want to do is rush around on moving day because it will seriously cut into your energy levels and affect the quality of all of your packing efforts.

When everything has been packed away, be sure to give yourself plenty of time before leaving for your new home so that you don’t feel rushed and can take your time. This extra hour or two will make a world of difference when it comes to unpacking all of those boxes!

Stay positive on moving day – it’s going to go just fine!

The last thing anyone wants when they’re stressed out is negativity from others! If you leave behind a positive attitude while moving, then your helpers will be sure to return the favor. When everyone is in good spirits it makes everything go much more smoothly and ensures that there are no problems with what should be one of the happiest days of your life!

When packing away all boxes for transport, make sure to leave behind a positive attitude so that those helping you move can be sure to keep it going. This step is important because the energy of everyone moving plays a big role in how smoothly everything goes!

I wish I had more time to tell you just how wonderful Fedor and his Treasures crew were with my recent move. I just started a new job in a new state. I had trouble with towing my car with my moving truck. I had to concentrate on that problem when Treasures was taking my items from moving truck to new apartment. They got everything done nicely and affordably. They were my “knights (movers) in shining armor “! The most dependable and capable moving group I’ve ever had! Update: Nov 2023: I used Treasure Moving again, and they did a great job again! I had them put some boxes and tubs of items in my new storage room. Melvin and Moises did a quick and efficient moving of items from apartment to storage. They organized my boxes in storage to where I’ll be able to walk in the room and get to any box, They were fantastic! I’ll use Treasure again and again!

This was the smoothest moving experience we had ! Highly recommend. We moved from Arlington VA to Clarksburg MD. Marlon and Carlos were on time, packed everything carefully, moved everything to our new place in just a few hours! Here's the kicker, the freight elevator in our building could not be reserved due to construction. But they moved everything anyway! If the elevator was available, we are sure these guys would have completed the task in under an hour. They are super considerate, kind and efficient. Could not recommend them more. Treasure moving company is a treasure and Marlon and Carlos were excellent !

I used many movers in Baltimore (>4. I lost count). I used Treasure once and I was so impressed with their fair pricing, careful handling, speed, and professionalism at the time. They provided the best moving experience that I remember in this City. So, I moved again today and used their services to pack my pod. I had Marlon and Carlos who were spectacular. The woman reserving my move was available nearly daily to answer questions and was super attentive leading to the move. I was not disappointed. I highly recommend them for your next move, whether you a need hand with a pod or request full service moves. After talking to the workers, I learned that they have >15 years of experience in the moving industry. *Be careful when you looking for moving companies here. Some of them are not professional movers. I had a mover cause major damage… that they had to return to make repairs (Charm City Movers). Another left the job within 30 minutes of the move and left my all my items/boxes on the side walk! More than likely, Treasure will do a good job!

Dennys and Rony did a great job moving 3 large display cabinets and many heavy boxes from Taneytown back to Columbia. They wasted no time and took care of everything like they were their own, and fees were much less than expected. Treasure Moving should be proud to have both of them as representatives. Kudos to a great team!!!
