7 Things To Inspect Before Renting A Home or Apartment: Checklist

Moving to a new home or apartment is exciting, but it can also be stressful. There are so many things to do and think about when you move from one place to another. In addition to the packing and moving process, there’s inspecting your future home before signing on the dotted line that needs some attention too.

New renters have lots of responsibilities, including but not limited to choosing the right home or apartment. This involves checking for important things that could cause you problems later on if left unchecked. To help ease your search process and protect yourself from some potential issues in advance, here are seven things worth looking into before renting a new place:

Look for any sign of pest infestation or mold

Frequently, the first signs of bedbugs only show up in a home after you have had an infestation for several months. If you see small, rust-colored stains on your sheets or pillowcases and/or clusters of tiny red welts on your skin, these may be indicators that you need to look further into pest problems. Pest infestations are not the only problem that could affect your home.

You should also be on the lookout for signs of mold. If you notice any water damage in the house, it’s possible there is an underlying mold issue behind it which can cause severe health problems when exposed to humans or pets over time. It is important to note that simply because you have seen a water leak doesn’t mean there is mold. However, if you have noticed any signs of discoloration or smell an odd odor in one area of your house and can’t seem to pinpoint the culprit, it may be best to get a professional opinion from someone who specializes in home inspections.

Inspect the roof and gutters

It is important to check the roof and gutters before you rent a home. Even if it hasn’t rained in days, water damage can still occur because of heavy winds or ice buildup. The last thing you want when moving into your new house is for rainwater to pour through holes in the ceiling while you’re away at work!

Checking for signs of water damage is a good way to know if you need to check the roof and gutters. If there are any cracks or holes in your ceiling, it’s also likely that insects have been crawling through them from above as well. In addition, make sure all the windows and doors close properly because drafty openings can lead to more problems.

You should also check that the gutters are not clogged with leaves and debris because this can cause them to overflow when it rains, which causes water damage within your home. If you see any of these warning signs of an excess amount of mold growth in your future abode, consider looking at other options before signing the lease.

Look at the electrical wiring

It’s important to look at the electrical wiring and connections in your future home before you sign a lease. Some problems that come with faulty or outdated wiring include flickering lights, blown fuses, tripped circuit breakers, and sparks coming from outlets.

You should also check all of the light switches for signs of wear because loose-fitting covers can lead to higher-than-normal energy bills and tripped breakers. If you see any of these warning signs in your home, it’s best to move on and not rent the place because electrical problems can be very costly!

Examine the plumbing fixtures, including sinks, toilets, bathtubs, showers, and tubs

While it’s not necessary to take a close look at every faucet, toilet bowl, shower head, bathtub jet, and drain in your future abode before signing the lease agreement, you should still inspect them all.

When inspecting these parts of your new place, make sure they are all securely attached and sealed with caulk where necessary. Also, ensure that each fixture works properly and that there are no leaks.

Remember to also inspect the kitchen sinks, including under-sink areas and cabinets. The last thing you want is a massive flood in your home because of a faulty garbage disposal or leaky faucet!

Inspections should be done for all fixtures within the house where possible before signing off on anything.

Check to see if the home has an alarm system installed

It’s important to check for an alarm system before you move in because it will help keep your belongings safe. Although there are plenty of people out there who don’t mind helping themselves with other people’s things, sometimes they can be caught; and when that happens, having a security camera recording the scene is very helpful!

Even if you’re not a fan of alarm systems, you should still have the front door properly secured with good locks to prevent intruders from entering.

If your future abode doesn’t already have an alarm system installed but is in a nice neighborhood where most homes do have one, then it may be best to rent elsewhere as they help deter burglars and can save you money in home insurance costs.

Check the flooring

It’s important that you check the flooring in your future home for any signs of damage before moving into it. Failing to do this can result from a number of problems, including accidents and unexpected leaks or flooding issues.

If there is any visible water damage on the wood floors, carpets should be pulled up as soon as possible so that the moisture can be dried out correctly. If there are any signs of mold growth, you should have it treated immediately because this is one of the most common causes of allergies and respiratory problems.

In addition to looking at visible damage or stains on your flooring, checking underneath them will also help determine if water has been leaking from somewhere else in the home. If there are any signs that the subfloor is damaged, you should have it professionally inspected before moving into your new place to ensure that it won’t further damage the floors above!

Inspect the appliances

It’s important to inspect all of the appliances in your future home before moving into it. Even if there are no visible issues with them, you should still give each one a thorough look over just to be sure that they’re working properly and haven’t been damaged by wear-and-tear or natural disasters like floods.

Before signing anything, it’s important to make sure that everything is in working order, both when you’re moving into and living in the home.

We blended two homes into one new home and the experience with Treasure Moving from start to finish could not of been less stressful. Securing the reservation was simple and the repeated confirmations were fantastic. Carlos and his crew were nothing less than amazing during the entire move. They made sure there was no damage to our furniture and placed it exactly where we requested. Also they utilized every since square inch of the truck. I could not believe how much they were able to get in there. The whole crew was so great to work with! I would recommend Carlos crew time and time again! Thank you

Treasure Movers moved 2 residences to a new home for me on 7/12/22. They packed all furniture professionally and did everything quickly and efficiently. They all had very good attitudes and were a pleasure to work with. Most all furniture moved without problems or damage to the items, which my prior movers were not able to do. They showed up on time and did not finish until the job was done. I highly recommend Treasure Movers.

Dennys and Melvin were so amazing. They were extremely fast and hard working. I have two pieces of antique furniture and they wrapped them both entirely in moving blankets and really studied the best way to carry them. They also took care to go around an especially bumpy place on our walk between apartments without me asking or even knowing I was watching. I did an inter-building move, so I didn't use the truck, but not a single thing of mine is broken. I will absolutely be using this company in the future.
