How to Prepare for Moving Day

Moving can be a difficult process. Not only do you have to pack up your belongings, but then you need to unpack and put everything into its new place. It can be hard on the mind and body, so it’s important that you are prepared when it comes time for the big move.

Moving is not something you want to do often, so make sure that when the time comes for a move, you are ready and fully prepared for moving day.

In this post we will go over some tips and advice that should help make your moving process easier on both yourself and those helping you out!

What to do before you move?

You will want to organize and pack up all of your belongings before the day you move. Place items that are used infrequently in boxes or bags and store them somewhere out of sight if possible so you can focus on packing your essentials for moving day.

  • Label boxes or bags with what they contain and write down the room in which you are going to place them. This will make it easier when unpacking your belongings at your new home
  • Make a list of all the rooms that need furniture, appliances, electronics etc., so that you know what items to pack up for moving day.
  • Pack up clothes and toiletries. Make sure you have enough of everything for your move, especially if the move is a long distance one.
  • It’s also important to pack necessities that will be needed on moving day such as paper towels or tissues, soap in containers without pumps, dish soap etc. If you have personal items that you need to bring with you on moving day, such as medication or other important things like documents that can’t be left behind just in case they are needed, pack those too.
  • Be sure to check and make sure there is nothing left out before the movers come!

How to pack your things for the move?

Since moving to a new place is an important event in one’s life, it’s best not to leave packing until the last minute. It can be overwhelming and stressful if you don’t know what you’re doing. Below are a few tips on how to pack your things for the move!

  • Determine what you want to keep. This will be the most important part of your packing process because, if it’s not on this list (or in an itemized list), then chances are that you’re going to have a difficult time finding it later when unpacking. It is best to take everything out and go through every nook and cranny of your home to assess what you want to keep.
  • Sort through the things that are going with you, this includes clothing, jewelry, TV’s (and furniture), electronics, important papers such as birth certificates or marriage license/divorce decrees, passports (if applicable). This will give you a final list of what you are bringing with you.
  • Pack the items that need to be stored for your move. This includes anything from clothes, books, small appliances or kitchenware- all packed in sturdy boxes and well marked so they can easily find their way into your new home when it is time to unpack.
  • Assign someone trusted this final list to do the packing for you because it is not easy to pack everything up in one day, especially if this person has never been through a move before. If you are doing your own packing be sure to take breaks and make sure that someone is watching over children or pets while you’re working on these tasks.
  • Create labels with instructions so that the movers will be able to find every box when they get to your new home. Be sure that this person is trustworthy and someone you know personally so there won’t be any confusion on where things go.
  • Pack anything that needs cold storage such as wine or other beverages, meat, dairy products with ice packs before placing them in boxes marked with the date it should be eaten by and a list of what is inside
  • Pack your important papers in one place so that you know where to find them when unpacking. This includes your credit cards, bank information, or birth certificates. You might want to keep these documents with photocopies just in-case any of the originals are lost.

Advice on how to make moving easier

The key to getting a move done smoothly is in the planning and preparation. This starts with knowing what you need to bring, how much of it you have, and where everything should go so that packing can be as efficient as possible. It’s also important not to pack too far ahead because things may change (e.g., if you get a promotion and need to move). The following is a list of tips that will help you get ready for your move:

  • Start packing at least one month in advance to give yourself time to do it right and not feel rushed.
  • Create labels for every box so everything can be unpacked efficiently. Consider using stickers, masking tape, or just writing on the boxes.
  • Make a list of what you need to bring and create a plan for packing. Be sure not to forget anything!

Other helpful tips that will help make the transition smoother, such as setting up a new address with utility companies, finding a grocery store nearby, etc…

The day of the move is finally here and now you need to worry about how things will go from this point forward. You want everything in your new home, as well as life there, to be perfect but that can’t happen without a little bit of work on your part. The following are some helpful tips for making sure your transition goes smoothly.

  • Setting up a new address with utility companies: You will need to set up an account for your electricity, gas service or cable company and also make sure you have what’s called “occupancy permits” from the city where you’re moving if it is different than the one on your driver’s license. Most of these services will do this for you if you’re moving within the same utility company, but they may require a deposit.
  • Finding grocery stores nearby: You might be tempted to buy your groceries from where your old house was or near your new one, but make sure that there are actually grocery stores in both neighborhoods before making any decisions about which ones to use.
  • Planning for after the move: This is a great time to take care of some things that you might not have had time for before moving, like getting your car serviced or taking out something called “homeowner’s insurance” or updating your renters insurance in case anything happens to your new home and belongings during this transition period.

Now that you’ve read through our moving tips, we hope you are ready to pack up and move! The next step is finding a local moving company. We recommend searching for movers in your state because they will have the most local knowledge of what is required when moving long distances. You should also be sure to find out if any hidden fees or other charges might apply before committing and signing contracts with them. This way, there won’t be any surprises down the road which can lead to costly disputes. We blended two homes into one new home and the experience with Treasure Moving from start to finish could not of been less stressful. Securing the reservation was simple and the repeated confirmations were fantastic. Carlos and his crew were nothing less than amazing during the entire move. They made sure there was no damage to our furniture and placed it exactly where we requested. Also they utilized every since square inch of the truck. I could not believe how much they were able to get in there. The whole crew was so great to work with! I would recommend Carlos crew time and time again! Thank you

Treasure Movers moved 2 residences to a new home for me on 7/12/22. They packed all furniture professionally and did everything quickly and efficiently. They all had very good attitudes and were a pleasure to work with. Most all furniture moved without problems or damage to the items, which my prior movers were not able to do. They showed up on time and did not finish until the job was done. I highly recommend Treasure Movers.

Dennys and Melvin were so amazing. They were extremely fast and hard working. I have two pieces of antique furniture and they wrapped them both entirely in moving blankets and really studied the best way to carry them. They also took care to go around an especially bumpy place on our walk between apartments without me asking or even knowing I was watching. I did an inter-building move, so I didn't use the truck, but not a single thing of mine is broken. I will absolutely be using this company in the future.
